Call for Abstracts: UKKS Annual Conference 2025 (Sheffield)
We are pleased to announce the UK Kant Society Annual Conference for 2025, on the theme: ‘The Keystone of Critical Philosophy: Kant’s Theory of Freedom’. The conference will take place at the University of Sheffield, Sept. 1st-2nd. Deadline for abstracts is April 18th, we aim to send decision letters by May 19th. Venue to follow.
Keynote Speakers:
Prof. Laura Papish (George Washington University)
Prof. Christopher Insole (University of Durham)
The conference will focus on Kant’s thoughts on and theory of freedom throughout his work, from the Nova Dilucidatio to the Metaphysics of Morals, and beyond. Any abstracts tackling freedom in Kant, the influences on Kant’s theory of freedom, or the reception of his theory, will be taken into consideration. Especially welcome are papers on Kant’s metaphysics of free will, the epistemic status of our awareness of freedom - in ourselves or others -, Kant’s account of moral responsibility, Kant’s arguments for the reality of the free will, the possibility of choosing evil, the compatibility of determinism and freedom, the compatibility of a belief in God and free will according to Kant, and the role of moral education and historical progress in the realisation of freedom.
The abstracts should be suitable for a 25-30 minute presentation, with 15-20 minutes for discussion, and they should be about 500 words in length. There are various sources that offer guidance on how to write abstracts, one that we think is particularly relevant for philosophy is https://cjblunt.com/abstracts-and-introductions/. Abstracts should be prepared for anonymous refereeing and sent to [email protected]. In a separate document, please, include your name, institutional affiliation, email address, and paper title. If you are a member of an underrepresented group, you may include that in the separate document in compliance with BPA/SWIP guidelines.
As with previous conferences, we will be charging a minimal conference fee, but are applying for funding to offer support to PhD and ECRs. Details to follow.
